Bring characters fully to life—and make readers care what happens to them
Ideal for writers who want to strengthen their storytelling and heighten reader engagement through character development.
Fiction and memoir invite us into other people’s lives. As readers, we follow characters—lovable or despicable—because we care about them and are curious about what happens next.
In this webinar, we’ll explore how to bring characters alive on the page through sensory, “whole-body” writing. Three-dimensional characters inhabit space through physical presence, experience the world through their senses, and feel and express emotion. Their needs and desires lead to choices and actions that create the interest and tension needed to evolve plot and theme.
Using examples from novels and memoir, we’ll examine how to step deeply into characters’ experiential realms and consciousness to create authentic emotional connection. We’ll also look at how to select, distill, and focus material to support character arcs that serve the larger story arc.
